PSCAD simplesolarfarm output drops back to 100MW when scaling to 200MW

Hey everyone, I'm trying to double the power output of the simplesolarfarm example in PSCAD.

By default, it puts out about 100MW at the POC. I want to push it to 200MW, so I changed the scaling from 50 to 100.
The problem is the output is messed up now. The power tries to ramp up to 200MW, but then immediately drops back down to 100MW.

I have also attached my file, and would appreciate it if anyone could take a look and help. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Richard,

There are two ways to make a farm larger in terms of power output. Either upgrade the inverter to be able to transfer more power (can be difficult), or increase the inverter scaling (easy). It seems in your case, you are trying to just increase the scaling.

Simply changing the scaling on the inverter is not sufficient to increase the overall rating of the plant. You must also look at the following items:

  • Any changes required in the PPC
  • Any changes required in the MPT
  • Depending on where the scaling is, look at the step up transformer rating.

I took a quick look at this model. The defaulte example simplesolarfarm actually does not take reference values in per unit, but rather in SI units. This is typically not the case in industry so it can be easy to overlook. So in your case make sure that the active power reference to the PPC is increased.

Further this model seems not to have an MPT (also not typical for industry). So there is nothing else to do.

Give it a try and let us know how it goes!
